Blue Moon Belgian White was first brewed in 1995 by Keith Villa, a brewmaster at the Sandlot Brewery, located at Coors Field in Denver, Colorado. Inspired by other traditional Belgian wheat beers, Villa crafted Blue Moon to feature a smooth, slightly sweet flavor with hints of orange peel and coriander, setting it apart from other wheat beers at the time. To further enhance its distinct citrus character, the beer is often served with an orange slice garnish, which has since become a signature part of its presentation.
Originally named "Bellyslide Belgian White," the brew was later rebranded as Blue Moon, a nod to the phrase "once in a blue moon," to capture its unique, rare appeal and flavor profile. Despite the initial skepticism, Blue Moon's approachable taste and distinctive Belgian style helped it gain popularity. Over the years, it has become one of the most well-known craft beers in the U.S., playing a significant role in introducing Belgian-style wheat beers to a broader, more mainstream audience.
